Derek Holt– “Gone Home”

Derek Holt.

With sadness, we have learned of the death of Derek Holt, most recently Group President at 34th Lancaster (St. Chad’s) Group.

Derek was a very long serving member of the Movement having been awarded The Chief Scout’s 60 years Service Award in 2017 and a Bar to the Silver Acorn in 2011.

Derek was born in Heywood in 1931 and first experienced the joys of Scouting in that town. Following his move to Lancaster he was instrumental in forming the 34th Lancaster and was Assistant Scout Leader from 1952, Scout Leader in the 1950’s,  Group Scout Leader for 10 years and in his Group Supporter role helped to keep the Group going through sometimes difficult times.

Derek also contibuted to the efficient running of the District having been a member of the District Executive Committee for 8 years from 2004 – 2012. Up to the time of his illness he would always attend the Group and the District’s Annual General Meetings.

He is remembered with fondness by all who knew him, for his commitment and dedication to Scouting and, as a true follower of the promise, always doing his best.

Our thoughts are with Stephen and the family at this sad time.

Derek’s funeral is on 19th August at 12:30 but due to the current situation it will be family only.

I may go and stand in the lane outside the crematorium as he arrives. I think we could probably do this ‘social distanced’.
