St. George’s Day photos

‘I want to thank everyone who attended the St George’s Day parade and service in Morecambe on 23rd April.   It was a huge attendance and very colourful.   I think we all enjoyed our service and the songs with actions and the very clever way the vicar Graham Pollitt from Caton Church put over the message about our Promise and how not to be pushed about in today’s world.

Well done to the small cub who recited the Cub Law and to the Scout for remembering all of the Scout Law – a big audience for both of them.   Thanks to all  my ADCs and team for their help in organisation, and smiling throughout the event.

I thank all the leaders for the your  patience in getting us all into the Platform – we were geared up for 350, so 500 was a bit of a surprise – a good one, but difficult to seat and accommodate, and I do apologise for those who had to stand for the whole thing!
I was very pleased to see we can turn out well over one third of the district for an event, and I know many of you attended your own St George’s day parades and services on the Sunday or throughout the week, well done to all.’

John Buckley

I have appointed John Buckley as the new Badge Secretary.   He will sell badges each Saturday in the back room of the shop and arrange a deputy from a small team of volunteers from SASU when he is away on active scouting weekends.

He will also sell badges each Monday when the shop is open from 6.30 – 8 p.m. i.e before the scout leader meeting or cub leader meetings,  EXCEPT for the last Monday each month which is usually the Appointments evening when the room is in use.   He is happy to accept badge orders over the phone – his number is 01524/424660.

If you want small orders posted out then please supply John with SAE and he will do this, upon receipt of your payment by cheque or cash.

I  hope you will be pleased with this news.   Please support us by buying badges from the district, and the shop for uniform sales and handbooks and other scouting items, and tell your parents about this, don’t automatically ask them to buy on line,  as we do reply on any profits to be ploughed back into the district to reduce your capitation fees.

Lonsdale District Scouts are extremely proud to celebrate the award of a Silver Acorn and three Bars to the Silver Acorn in this year’s St. George’s Day Awards!

Aileen Newby, CSL at Caton Church has been awarded the Silver Acorn, “awarded after a period of not less than 20 years of specially distinguished service while holding an adult appointment.”

GSL at 5th Lancaster, Velma Keating MBE, District Secretary Lorna Musgrave and Alan Hague, SL at 16th Morecambe have all been awarded the Bar to the Silver Acorn, which “may be awarded after not less than five years of further especially distinguished service while holding an adult appointment.”

I know you will join me in offering our warmest congratulations to them all. The awards are richly deserved and reflect many years of outstanding service to the movement.

The cost of the Challenge Competition will be £8 per team.

This will be instead of a Camping Competition.

The Saturday programme will be devised, run and marked by the Young Leaders of the District and will run from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm. with a lunch break. There will also be a quiz and a wide game on Saturday night.

Scouts will be marked over the weekend on the following things:-
Their ‘Wet’ and ‘Dry’ programmes for the weekend, plus weekend menus.
Saturdays evening meal cooked on a wood fire.

Most of the marking will be done by the Young Leaders of the District.

Extension of Appointment of Pat Griffin as DC for Lonsdale

I am delighted to be able to write and inform you that Pat Griffin has agreed to extend her term as your District Commissioner until May 2014. This will be her final term. Her determination and commitment have been welcomed and Lonsdale continues to strengthen and grow.

I know Pat is keen that no momentum is lost over the next two years. Supporting our Groups is key to our success. Lonsdale continues to enjoy great support from our Scout County, not least of which via our County funded Development Officer Barbara Hughes. This is in part recognition of the work to do and the opportunities to grow Scouting across the District. The flourishing Explorer Scout section leads the way in West Lancashire and has clearly provided benefit to the District.

I know you will join me in thanking Pat, and Arthur, for the previous five years and of course wish her well for the exciting two years ahead.
