Bowlander Success

Teams from 16th Morecambe Scouts and Lune Valley ESU have each won their respective sections in the recent West Lancashire County Scout 'Bowlander' Hiking Competition.

The 'Bowlander' is an annual event for teams of 4 - 7 Scouts and involves 2 days hiking, with an overnight camp, within the beautiful Forest of Bowland area.

Teams are required to plan a route, visiting a number of checkpoints, and have to arrive at each within a limited time window based on their estimated timings within their Route Plan.

27 teams, from all around West Lancashire, 22 from the Scout Section and 5 from ESU's, reported to the start point at Jubilee Tower near Quernmore on Saturday 5 April to commence their journeys. The weather was none too kind with a fierce icy wind sweeping across the moors coupled with intermittent showers.

After having an equipment check, the Scout Section teams set off to navigate their route of 12 miles going via Hare Appletree Farm, Damas Gill, Lower Moor Head, Meeting House Farm, Ortner and Knowsly and on through Dolphinholme and down the Wyre Way to Guy's Farm, Forton where they camped for the night.

Explorer teams went initially via Grit Fell, Rakehouse Barn and Moor Bottom Farm before joining, at Meeting House Farm, the route taken by the Scouts to Guy's Farm.
