District Hiking Competitions 2009

The 2-day 'Senior' event took place over the weekend of 2/3 May. The 8 teams taking part had to plot their routes to visit a number of checkpoints along a 10 mile course keeping to a time schedule set on their route plan.
The teams had an early start on Saturday morning from the Brock Valley Picnic site (SD 548 430). Having completed an essential equipment check, they set off, in beautiful springtime weather, for the overnight camp site at Guys Farm, Forton walking via Calder Vale. From there they had to navigate to the second base at Grizedale Bridge.
Their routes then took them by Nicky Nook and down into Scorton village. Here there was time for a welcome drink and an ice cream in the village post office before setting off for the next base at Cleveley Bridge and the final run into Guys Farm (SD 509 516).
After cooking their evening meals the teams had an opportunity to test their toxophily skills, take part in wide games and a quiz before settling in for the night (heavy showers!).
The Junior teams joined their older counterparts on Sunday morning and both age groups then completed a separate six mile course around the Scorton area visiting a number of bases where they were asked to answer a number of questions on navigational and mapping topics.
Teams' navigational skills and timing varied but 1st place in the Senior competition went to16th Morecambe who won the Dean Morrell trophy.
16th Morecambe made it a double by also winning the Junior competition.

Thanks to all involved in the organisation and running of another successful event, particularly to John who set the routes and masterminded proceedings.
