By the kind permission of Dr. J. F. Dow, the gardens at his residence, “Uplands,” Red Hills, Arnside, were open to the public on Sunday afternoon when a collection was taken for the funds of the 1st Arnside Scout Group.
About 140 people took advantage of the opportunity to see the beautiful, well-kept gardens and the collection realised £3 7s. 6d. During the afternoon the Group Scoutmaster, The Rev. Elphin A. Ellis, on behalf of the members of the group, presented to Dr. J. F. Dow, a “Thanks Badge” for his continued interest in the Group. Dr. Dow suitably
replied.

In 1939 Dr. James Fleming Dow, born 1883 in Hornsey, London, was Medical Officer of Health and Emergency ARP Medical Officer. He was a Captain in the R.A.M.C. in WW1 and played for the Northern Universities XV from 1905/6.
