John Peel, Certificate of Merit, 1917

River Lune, Lancaster

I have been unable to find any reference in the local newspapers or Scouting records to this award.

Looking at other instances of its award in newspaper archives the Certificate seems to have been given to youth members in the early days for acts of bravery, lifesaving or rescue.

Perhaps the recipient was most likely John Peel born 25 Jun 1902 at 12 Bridge Lane, Lancaster.

He was a son of Richard Peel & Isabella Nightingale. In the 1911 Census the family is living at 12 Bridge Lane, Lancaster. Richard is a River Dredger working for the Lancaster Port Commissioners.

John Peel married Isobel Hughes at Lancaster, St Mary in 1926.

In 1939 his occupation is given as Linoleum Hanging Rooms Foreman and he is living at 19 St. Mary’s Place, Lancaster.
