Lonsdale Scouts Activity Centres: Site History

 

Tom Helme was a part of the Local Association from 1911 and was the first DC to wear uniform. He was County Commissioner from 1938-1948. His bequest enabled Littledale and SilverHelme campsites to be bought.

Littledale Activity Centre was opened in 1962. A crowd of about 2,000 people attended the opening ceremony.

Littledale Activity Centre was previously a Mill, initially for Corn and then to make bobbins.  The current wet weather shelter was an original Mill building.

SilverHelme Activity Centre was purchased in 1963 for £750.

SilverHelme Activity Centre has areas named after local Scouters:  Albert Mortimer (1911-1968) and Max Melling (1914-2006)

Following a break in SilverHelme Activity centre had to close for repair & refurbishment in 1982. Harry Brooks, one of the first Wardens, reopened the site.
